Opportunity knocks in the 1976 winter blizzard.

I was ten when my dad asked me if I wanted to make money during the winter of 1976. I replied yes and then he put a shovel in my hand and informed me that our neighbors had driveways and walkways to be shoveled. So I started with my next-door neighbor and continued to the next neighbor. I shoveled for four neighbors and they were delighted and appreciative of my work. Then I knocked on the door of Mr. and Mrs. Morton and their middle-aged son answered and informed me they weren’t home but that he would pay me instead. So I went to work shoveling the long narrow sidewalk. Even though it was cold that evening I kept warm and became somewhat sweaty from my laborious task.

I went to the front door and informed Mr. Morton the son that I finished the sidewalk. To my surprise he criticized my work that it was not wide enough and there was still ice on the cement walk way and that his driveway had not been cleared. I was ten years old I didn’t have ice melt in my back pocket and he never mentioned the driveway. After listening to the rant of from this displeased man he stated he was not paying me for a poor job and that he was going to let my father know what poor work I did. I went home and told my father what had happened while presuming that my father would side with the neighbor’s son. However dad said that if he knew the son was home he would have said only go there only if the aged parents are there. Harry Morton was not like his son, the father was very reasonable gentleman. But my father described the son as a penny pincher, a real scheming tight wad who would attempt to cheat someone out of money. The one neighbor whom my father thought would be cheap with me actually paid me very well and thanked me for doing a job well done at my age.

The irony of this story is that Vincent Morton the son would receive what he sowed. The son became a local politician making shady deals with vendors. Deliveries were made at the front door of his office and disappeared quickly out the back door. After some time of these shady operations authorities were alerted and an investigation began. It was alleged that Vincent robbed taxpayer money by selling the deliveries to buyers on the street and pocketing the money. He allegedly amassed roughly a million dollars in selling shipments of various materials to street buyers. The case went to court where he was found guilty and had to pay back the money he had stolen. The day I met this man I sensed something shady about him but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I remember his eyes, they were shifty. Since that time I have learned read body language by studying books on body language and eyes and facial expression. People can lie but their body language speaks volumes. I have also learned not work for people who are unappreciative tight wads with their money. In my experience younger men will pay you for value, senior citizen men will pay your for value, but for some reason middle-aged men will try to get something for nothing.
