"Mom rearranges the bedroom furniture." By Roger J Lown
"Mom rearranges the bedroom furniture." By Roger J Lown
When I was a young boy I remember my father who was
a volunteer fireman waking up out of a sound sleep to the blaring tones of his
alert radio. He jumped out of bed and into his clothes and responded in his car
to the call or the firehouse. Mom could not sleep at night until dad came home
from a nighttime structure fire. One night in particular dad ran out to a
structure fire. My mother could not sleep and she felt a bit ambitious so she
decided to rearrange her bedroom furniture in the early morning hours. My mother
although she did not have a husky frame could move mountains when she put her
mind to it. Inch by inch she moved the bulky furniture until it was in the
place she desired.
When dad came home before the light of
day our house was dark and he had no idea that his bed was in a different
location. My father knew the layout of his house so ordinarily he had no
problem. This was no ordinary night.
He walked quietly into the bedroom without even a floorboard creaking.
Then mom heard a loud thud followed by my father yelling, “Ouch!” and some other choice words I wont mention because my
daughter will be reading this. Mom turned the light on and found that dad
tripped over the nightstand that wasn’t there when he left for the structure
fire call.
