A
true story from the author’s childhood memories.
I
have a funny story to share with you regarding my dad. When I was in my last
year of grade school or elementary school as it was called, my mother worked a
night shift job caring for an elderly woman. Dad woke me up for school on the
mornings that mom was still at work then he also headed out to work. My father
was a full-time school bus driver who enjoyed being a substitute driver,
because it provided a change of pace having a different route each week.
One
day I decided to play hooky from school. Later that day when dad came home from
work he had a series of questions for me. How was school? What did I do? What
did I learn? So I gave him a bull……. story. Then his voice became quite stern
and his eyes widened turning into lasers beaming right through me! He exclaimed
sternly “You weren’t in school today!” Defending
my lie, I blurted out, “I was to in
school today.” Again he said much louder- “No you weren’t in school today!” Then I defiantly yelled back, “Yes- I was in school!” Finally, he
ended the argument abruptly retorting, “No….
you weren’t in school today because your school bus driver “Henry” called in
sick and “I was your bus driver
today!” Oops! He got me on that one and with that notion I ran straight to
my room.
My
mother had to talk me into coming out of my room for dinner that evening. My
father was stern when he needed to be but never physically or mentally abusive.
I had some wisdom as a young boy in that I never really challenged my father’s
authority other than during this situation.
